I can't believe I just made such a terrible cup of tea! Man. Anyway, here's thee entry I wrote last night into a notebook at work (although I have literally hours of downtime, I don't like logging in to LJ there).

I went over to Austenblog out of boredom - I like the book reviews, they generally fit in with my views on Austenfic, especially now that everyone's sick of PPZ - and read the comments on the latest Emma post.

1) Someone talking about the modern, casual manners (esp. complaining about Frank putting his head in Emma's lap at Box Hill) reminded me that I really need to find some books on the manners, customs, etc. for ordinary people in the late 18th/early 19th century, especially American. I know of the existence of travelers' diaries that go into this subject, but I can't remember where I've read of them and I'm not quite sure where to find them. Anyway, I'm going to do some NYPL searches, but if anyone knows of anything like that I'd be glad to hear a title or author. All of the books I've seen relating to this are focused on the very rich in London or, like, the Old West. Also, I just found out that "make a cake of oneself" was only found by Heyer in one private memoir, so there is no excuse for its overuse in fiction.

2) "Purist" has evidently become a pejorative in Austenfandom, sort of like "Harmonian". I can see how it started (probably with journalists saying that purists will dislike the latest movie because they're shriveled and joyless) and how the purists would get very annoyed at this, but it's very obnoxious to me. For one thing, it's just linguistically untidy to take away a word from neutrality without replacing it - and every fandom uses the word "purist" to denote someone who wants a minimum of additions and subtractions from the original book in an adaptation. For another, it's unfair to change the debate from purism/variety (both neutral, can be used negatively by opponents) to Austen fan/person with no respect for Austen. I don't know, what do you think? Am I just biased? Is there a good word to use for "purist" here?

Come to think of it...

I don`t think there`s such a thing as a pointless event.
I think that some stupid things are meant to happen mainly to open up our eyes. So we can find out who we are, what we want and how to get there in a good honest way.
Sometimes people are meant to let you down so you can grow to be a better person yourself.

Thinking like that make`s every heartbreak and backstab a bit more bearable.
But only if you`re willing to see the point of trying. Otherwise all is lost.

I get that now.

First off, I'd like to say that Supernatural cons > than anime cons by about 1000%. I think it's because the age range is slightly higher--there is less annoying squealing and mangled Japanese and more drinking and discussing characters and such. I am fully on board with SPN cons.

Also, Jared at least is confirmed for next year, so I picked up my Gold pass. FYI, you really shouldn't bother with Preferred seats. By that point you're 3/4 of the way back and you might as well just save $25 and go with the General pass. I spent a looot of time craning my neck to see over the people in front of my though (because when I watched the screens, I found myself forgetting I wasn't just watching a youtube video, which...kind of negates the entire experience). I'm definitely glad I'm going with Gold next year, and I wouldn't recommend anything less than Silver, if you have the change to spare.

Anyway, I'm going to try to go in chronological order and get everything down for my own benefit.

P.S. TOTALLY FORGOT TO MENTION that Misha looked amazing--black suit with a vest, red striped tie, and a jacket. Guh, gorgeous. He's even better looking in person, if that is imaginable. @_@ Jim was wearing a(n awesome when taken in context of the show) shirt that said, "Kill them all--let God sort it out." XD Hilarious.

I'm interested to see what my photos are going to look like. I'm honestly not sure I even managed to look at the camera for either of them. Smiles were definitely glazed. And I'm pretty sure I never made eye contact with Misha. Eye-nose contact, maybe. I might have just glanced at his chin.

P.P.S TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT THIS. A few days ago somebody posted a list of questions not to ask Jared and Jensen at the con over on dean_sam. It was kind of right and kind of obnoxious at the same time. Mostly what bothered me is that the girl who came up with it stated straight up that she didn't want to hear any negative comments from people about it because it was just for fun, but then she was trying to get everybody to post them up on their hotel doors while still refusing to change anything to make it less offensive because it was just for fun. Riiiight. You can't have it both ways--either it's just for fun and it's just for you, or it's widely distributed to the public and you put some real fucking effort into it. I don't really like that attitude.

So ANYWAY, I was super fucking thrilled when my roomie came back from the bathroom and delivered this work of brilliance to me:

1. This is pretty much me musing about MY views on the subject and how said subject applies to me, and the path I believe I am meant to walk. Every other view I've had on the subject has felt like a struggle, and this one does not, which is a sign for me. I certainly don't think that everyone thinks like me.
2. I'm definitely not saying that the traits I'm discussing are the exclusive domain of the gender I link them to, because that is just stupid. Everyone is different. My opinion on this is certainly not the be-all and end-all of thought on the subject.

This view of mine isn't about dominion over another. It's about finding a person (because I've never been able to get behind that idea that there is just ONE person out there for you, and that's it) that you can grow and learn and widen your horizons with, whose path - while maybe not exactly like your own - complements yours, and who you consider a true friend, because I think that love is really just that - knowing you would do whatever was necessary and in your ability to do for someone that you genuinely care for, someone whose opinions and views and feelings matter to you, someone who accepts you as you are. And when we can discard the overblown ideas of "love" that the media tends to sell, we find that it really is that simple and uncomplicated.

It probably looks like I don't watch TV anymore, but trust me, I still am.

Ugly Betty doesn't get a cut, because this is just a general question/observation (I've only seen the first six or so episodes, The Fall Issue, and The Butterfly Effect pt. 1) - shipping Betty and Daniel: this is going to be your next Zutara/so obviously going to happen, why are you even asking?

Last night I watched The Secret Life of Mrs. Beeton and OMG JJ Feild, despite his lack of a real first name or correctly spelled last name, is just insanely charming. I mean. He enters in a burst of exuberance and then he's like "I'm so sexy, wanna marry me?" and then even when she finds him at a brothel and he's all drunk he's still completely charming. The movie in general has put me into baby-wanting overdrive, although I really don't want my husband to give me and the babies syphilis (JJ FEILD HOW COULD YOU).

Also, apparently the last few SPN episodes were hilarious (one was a Trickster-fueled Grey's Anatomy parody) and I need to watch them.

I just wrote a really long entry about all the shit that's been going on with my friends.
Shit I don't undestand.
Shit that pisses me off, because they're being accused of things they never did.

There's so much drama, and one side expect you to chose a side, and when you decide not to you get called a bitch as well.

But I'm tired of writing so many entries about this, and ending up putting them on Private, just cos I fear losing a friend who's on the 'other side'. A very dear friend.



I think this shit has to be over and done already. For months it's been going on, and now other people are being pulled apart as well. Things have escalated. Gone out of hand.
Or a better term: "The shit has hit the fan".
And it's pissing me off more than anything.

There's already been done enough damage as there is. There's already someone hurting extremely much, that while I think she doesn't deserve in the least bit. And now someone else is hurting as well. Being called a bitch, when I, a person who has even less to do with this, is more the bitch in this situation. Because I at least said things. I said some pretty mean things.
And she's the one getting the blame.


It's beyond unfair.
Now two of my dearest friends are hurting, when they don't deserve it in the least bit.
And you can go ahead now thinking I picked a side.
I didn't until you forced us to.

Today, I received a postcard from Dean Winchester, intended for Sam, from Spain. It contains the line 'I need your help on this case because I don't hablo any Español'.

There was a Writer's Block question a little while ago about your all-time favourite romantic movie scene. Mine is a scene from Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid, and I really don't think I can actually describe why I find that particular scene so breathtakingly romantic. And even if I could find the scene on YouTube, I'm not sure it would have the same impact.
